Stratosphere-Troposphere Radar Facility at CUSAT
The indigenously-developed stratosphere-troposphere (ST) radar at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), under the Centre’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, was officially handed over to the Advance Center for Atmospheric Radar Research, CUSAT by Honorable Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan for full fledged operations and research.
Dr. B M Reddy, Chairman PIC, was the Chief Guest. The event was graced by the presence of Hon. Vice Chancellor of CUSAT, Dr. J Latha, Dr. R K Mehajan, Scientist SERB, Dr. P. Sanjeeva Rao, SERB DST. The event was presided by eminent scientists and research scholars from all over the Indian atmospheric science fraternity.
Prof. K. Mohankumar, director of the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research, said the design, development, fabrication and installation of the radar project were done indigenously. A team of scientists and engineers at the varsity had supervised the project, which was implemented by a Chennai-based firm Data Patterns (India) Ltd.
The CUSAT Radar is a Wind Profile Radar which is the world's first 205 MHz pulse doppler RADAR. It measures the wind velocity vectors by Doppler Beam Swinging (DBS) technique. It covers an atmospheric range of 0.5km to 20km and operates at the frequency with a bandwidth of 5MHz.It is an active aperture phase array RADAR with 619 antenna elements. The profiler processes the reflected echoes and evaluates with signal processing software to determine the wind velocities in different altitude layers. The result is a set of three-dimensional wind vectors covering the altitude. profiler lower the costs of meteorological services by minimizing the use of radiosondes, weather balloons Sondes.
