Mezzanine Modules are modules of 148mm x 53mm size. This is an international standard defined as per ANSI VITA-12/96.
Providing typical analog and digital I/O functions, they feature a standard front panel, allowing ease of connection to the field, while mounted on the M Module carrier card.
Use of the M Module architecture provides the ability to mix multiple functions in a single chassis slot space.
Data Patterns has introduced a range of M Modules with carriers for different platforms. These products will feature the ability to isolate the field I/O from the system, at the same time providing isolation between M Modules.
This isolation is of great importance in system engineering because of the improved accuracy, ground loop elimination, system reliability and high common mode noise rejection capabilities. The DP-MM-1105 is a typical product providing these features. A highly stable signal conditioner module, suitable for precision bridge and stain sensor applications is the DP-MM-1123. It features 1microvolt stable performance. Precision DC sources and Precision AC sources are the other standard modules available from Data Patterns in the M Module form factor.
M Module carriers provide multiple slots on a single carrier. This allows multiple IP Modules to be provided on a single slot in a Compact PCI / VME / VXI / PCI card cage.
M Modules provide some unique advantages in system integration. These include:
- Utilisation of slot space, by providing multiple functions in a single slot
- Low cost implementation - small size of the M modules allows
- for providing only the quantity of I/O required for the application
- Availability of many functions on M form factor from multiple vendors
M Modules are typically used in Automatic Testing, Data Acquisition, Control and Process automation applications.
